Air Pumps and Airstones

Plant roots thrive when they are given water with high levels of dissolved oxygen. By adding an air pump and airstone to your reservoir tank set-up, the level of dissolved oxygen can be kept extremely high (around the saturation point).

Dissolved oxygen does two things: it keeps the plant roots healthy, as oxygen is needed by roots for respiration, and it allows beneficial microbes to flourish, too. Friendly microbes tend to like plenty of oxygen but pathogenic microbes (responsible for infections) are generally anaerobic, and therefore do not use oxygen.

The motion driven by the bubbling action will has the added benefit of keeping the nutrient solution in your reservoir or grow system evenly mixed.

In a DWC system, air pumps and air stones are essential. Without some way of delivering a fresh supply of oxygen to the nutrient solution, plants roots will effectively drown. If you run a DWC system, it is a very good idea to keep a spare air pump handy, in case of a failure. Your window of opportunity to act in that situation is very small, and you'll see a negative impact on plant health in very short order.
