Choosing the Right Digital Fan Cables - Technical Info

Digital fans are a huge improvement over old-school AC fans - they're more powerful, they consume less energy, and they can be controlled silently and with pinpoint accuracy. Once you've gone digital, there's no going back! It is, however, slightly more complicated to connect them to a controller; choosing the right cable(s) for the job is essential! The first thing to do is check out the following post, which explains the basics: How to Connect G.A.S EC Fans to Controllers. In this blog, we've added some additional info to help you make the right decision. The G.A.S Digital  EC Fan Cables can be found here.

Digital Fans

V1 Hyper Fan / Hyper Fan Stealth (No Longer On Sale)

The original Hyper Fan has a different signalling system to the new and improved V2 model, and the two versions are not compatible with the same equipment. The V1 is supplied with a 5m, 3-pin male-to-male cable. Controller-wise, you've got the following options.

G.A.S Multi Phase Controller – this controller is only compatible with V1 Hyper Fans. You can connect it up using the cable that's supplied with your fan. If you need to buy any replacement cables, you must always ensure that they are non-active. You can add a Non-Active Splitter (Pack 3) to run two fans if needs be, but make sure that your extractor is bigger than your intake, because there isn't a way of altering negative pressure levels.

Enviro Controller – can be connected to the Hyper Fan without the need of any extra cables. If you do need to buy a spare cable, again, stick to non-active.

The V2's upgraded signalling system renders it incompatible with the original G.A.S Hyper Fan Multi-Phase Controller. It now shares the same signalling system as the Vector EC. By default, V2 Hyper Fans connect to their supplied (non-thermostatic) controllers using 5m RJ11 cables. However, with the aid of a separate 3-pin converter (Pack 16), you can connect them to almost any controller in the G.A.S range.

The following controllers are compatible:

Enviro Controller, AC-EC, EC Fan Speed Controller, EC1 – all of these controllers can be connected using the cable supplied with the Hyper Fan V2 and the separately available 3-pin converter (Pack 16). Note that the EC1 only supports a single Hyper Fan V2. Do not use it with a splitter unless you are running Vector EC fans.

Gavita EL1F or EL2F – Hyper Fan V2s are compatible with these controllers straight out of the box. They will not require a 3-pin converter (cable pack 16). Instead, Hyper Fan V2s come with adapters that fit straight into the EL1F or EL2F. These controllers come supplied with splitters that allow you to link up two V2 Hyper Fans.

Vector EC fans are supplied without controller cables. If you want to connect them to a fan controller, you'll need to purchase either active or non-active male-to-male cables.

The Enviro Controller and AC-EC can be used with active or non-active cables. The EC5, EC Fan Speed Controller and EC1 will need active cables. Note that the EC1 can run two Vectors if you use add in an Active Y-Splitter (Pack 9).

Vectors can be connected to Gavita EL1F or EL2F controllers using the Gavita cable (Pack 10).
