When Should You Be Checking pH & EC?

If you’re growing with mineral nutrients (such as coco, hydro, or bottled salt-based feeds), checking both pH and EC is important. Plants can only absorb nutrients properly when the solution is within the correct range, and this kit gives you the basic tools to make sure your feed is on point.

This is especially useful for first-time growers, where small mistakes with nutrient strength or pH can quickly slow growth and stunt your yields.

Do You Need to Check pH & EC With Organic Feeds?

If you’re growing organically in soil, things are much more forgiving. EC monitoring isn’t required, and pH adjustment is usually unnecessary because healthy soil biology naturally buffers the root zone.

Best practice for organic growers is to treat tap water with Ecothrive Neutralise before feeding. This removes chlorine, chloramine, and excess carbonates, taking care of most water-related issues without the need for constant testing.

Some growers still choose to check pH occasionally to understand their water supply, but active adjustment is rarely needed when growing organically.

How the Basic pH & EC Testing Kit Works

The EC pen reads in μS/cm (microsiemens per centimetre), which can be easily converted:

1900 μS/cm = 1.9 EC (CF19)
0300 μS/cm = 0.3 EC (CF03)

Calibration solution is included so you can verify accuracy and maintain consistent readings over time.

Please note: Your pH pen may arrive with a small amount of mineral residue on the sensor. This is normal and can be removed by rinsing gently with clean, warm water before first use.
