How this Switchable 400 Watt HPS Grow Light Kit Works:
This light kit contains a lamp, ballast and reflector which together make up a functioning HPS grow-light.
The grow-lamp converts electrical power into light with a suitable colour-spectrum for growing plants. The reflector holds the grow-lamp and increases garden efficiency by reflecting the light shining upwards from the lamp back down into your grow-space so that it can be used by your plants. The ballast converts mains electricity to the correct voltage and current to fire-up and then run the grow-lamp.
This system can be run at 250w,275w or 400w, giving you the flexibility to tailor lighting to your plants' needs depending on their stage of growth, or to reduce heat levels when temperatures are an issue. There is also a 400w boost setting which runs the lamp at 440w to keep up the light output from an ageing lamp. The Sol Digital lamp has been selected for this kit specifically for its ability to run at different output levels without there being a negative shift in spectrum – an issue that can occur with other lamps that haven't been engineered specifically for the job.

How to use this Switchable 400 Watt HPS Grow Light Kit:
Hang the Supernova Reflector over the centre of the grow-space at an appropriate height. Our Easy Rolls (Pair), Rope Ratchet Hangers or Jack Chain are ideal for this. Screw the lamp into the lamp-holder in your reflector as tightly as possible by gripping the lamp with a clean dry cloth, taking care to avoid cross-threading. The lamp MUST be screwed into the lamp holder as tightly as possible. If it is not screwed in tightly then electrical arcing can occur between the centre contact of the lamp and the lamp-holder. This melts the solder contact on the bottom of the lamp, causing irrepairable damage and making it unuseable. Make sure that the lamp is clean and completely free of fingerprints, and other contaminants. Finally, make sure that your reflector is hung at the correct height.
Place your ballast in a conveniently close location on a flat, firm surface (not carpet). Try to choose a well ventilated place near to an electrical mains outlet. Ballasts run hot in use and should never be covered and there should be no combustible items in the vicinity. Connect the input lead of your reflector to the output lead or socket on the ballast, ensuring the cable is not pulled tight and does not come into contact with anything that will become hot during use (e.g. lamp, reflector, ballast). Connect the mains plug into an electrical outlet socket and switch it on. The ballast will start-up and light the lamp. Please note that in the event of an interruption to the mains supply, the ballast may not be able to restart the lamp until it has cooled back down. Always consider the inrush current drawn by a ballast when it is switched on. Your mains supply may trip out if several ballasts come on at the same time.
We recommend that you replace your lamp regularly to maintain your garden efficiency. The yields of your crops will be considerably reduced by using an old lamp. When replacing your lamp, the wattage rating MUST match the wattage of your ballast or there will be a high risk of fires or equipment damage.
Many plants need a certain light schedule to trigger a particular stage in the plant's life-cycle. For example, many plants require about 18 hours of light per day for a solid vegetative growth stage but later require a regular 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness per day to trigger the plant's flowering or fruiting stage. If you are unable to attend your garden on a regular (& punctual!) basis to turn the lights on and off at the right time then it is highly advisable to use something to do the switching for you. Regular time switches will burn out if used to switch a HID light(s) on and off. However, if you have only one 400 Watt grow-light then our LUMii Heavy-Duty 24Hr Time Switch is an economical way of making sure your grow-light is switched on and off at the right time without having to be there. If you have more than one grow-light then a combination of a Time Switch & Contactor with an appropriate number of outlets may be more suitable for you.
Warning: When HID lamps are switched on they run extremely hot. As with all high pressure sodium and metal halide bulbs it is necessary to avoid touching the lamp with anything such as fingers or plants as this may cause severe burns or fires. In particular avoid sprays or liquids coming into contact with the lamp as this may cause premature failure or even an explosion.
