How the pH 6 – 7.6 Liquid Test Kit works:
The pH 6 – 7.6 Liquid Test Kit utilises a chemical (reagent) which reacts with liquids in such a way that the colour of the mixture changes depending on what it’s pH is. The colour of the mixture in the phial can then be compared to the supplied chart to read off the pH that the colour is indicating. The test is effective for liquids with a pH in the range of 6 – 7.6. Only a drop or 2 of reagent is needed which means that this kit will last for many tests.
Using the pH 6 – 7.6 Liquid Test Kit:
To grow plants successfully, particularly in hydroponics, it is necessary to monitor and adjust the pH of your nutrient solution on a regular basis. In general, plants grown in hydroponics like a pH of approximately between 5.5 and 6.5 (plant species dependant) with a little bit of variation within this range. This is because plants can only absorb certain nutrients at a pH close to 5.5 and others at a pH closer to 6.5. If your nutrient solution strays out of this optimum range for too long, your plants will not be able to absorb all the nutrients that they need and will become deficient, leading to slowed growth and eventually sickness. To avoid pH problems, and the plant problems that it can cause, it is wise to check and adjust the pH of your nutrient solution very regularly (every day if possible). Soil grown plants tend to like a pH of around 6.5. A good way of finding out the pH of your soil is to test the run-off water which comes out of the bottom of the pot when you water.
To test the pH of nutrient solution or run-off, use a measuring syringe to draw off 2ml and then deposit it into the supplied test phial. Add 2 drops of the reagent and shake. The liquid in the phial will then turn a yellow, green or blue colour. Hold the phial against the supplied comparison chart and find which colour the liquid in the phial matches best. This will give you an indication of the pH of your nutrient solution or run-off water. The pH of your nutrient solution can be adjusted and then re-tested if necessary. Always rinse and dry the phial between tests and before storing. When you have practised performing the test a few times you may be able to use just 1ml of nutrient solution and add just 1 drop of reagent, thus making the kit last even longer.
Warning: pH adjustment fluids are highly caustic and require careful handling and storage.
