How the Lotus R1 Works

The Team at Medusa have taken onboard the comments of NFT users to create a system that delivers on all fronts, with a support tray that's angled to get the right balance between drainage and spreader-mat saturation, a low-profile design that's great for tight spaces, and a structure that can handle lots of weight without bowing - ideal for supporting those huge fruits!

The concept is easy: nutrient is pumped from the reservoir tank and over the angled plant support tray. It then flows down the tray and back into the reservoir, forming a loop. A layer of spreader mat is laid on the tray, which ensures that the nutrient solution is spread evenly. Root your chosen plant into a Rockwool cube, making sure that the roots are well developed, and place it on the tray. Cut a hole out of your Correx sheet and place it over the top tray to prevent light from penetrating down to the rootzone.

The Lotus R1 is designed to connect to your reservoir tank, straight out of the box. A float valve screws into a pre-drilled hole on the side of the unit. It connects up to a (separately available) header tank via a length of Icetube Pipe and click-fit connector. The float valve then allows in nutrient whenever levels inside the NFT system drop. With this kind of set-up, you can leave your system for prolonged periods of time without the risk of it drying out.

How to Use the Lotus R1

The Lotus R1 comes with an instruction sheet that will guide you through the set-up process.

Place the reservoir on a flat surface, preferably one that's not too cold. Concrete floors can affect the temperature of your nutrient solution. Connect up the float valve, ensuring that the valve itself sits inside. Place the plant support tray on top of the reservoir. Fit the feed pipe to the pump and place it though the hole in the top tray. Make sure that the sits within the square slot that's built into the floor of the reservoir. Place your spreader mat over the top tray. Cut it slightly longer than needed, so that a small length dangles through the drainage slot at the bottom.

Next, you'll need a plant that's been well rooted into a rockwool cube. Cut a hole in the Correx sheet so that it can accommodate the rockwool cube and place it over the top tray. Then place the Rockwool cube in the hole, so that it sits over the spreader matting. You can then fill up your system and add nutrients as specified. Turn on the pump and run it continuously. We recommend adding an air pump kit, which further oxygenates the rootzone for faster growth rates and a reduced likelihood of encountering crop destroying diseases, like pythium.
