How Danish Base Trays work
The fundamental principle of hydroponic cultivation relies on fertilized and aerated water to deliver all nutrition and oxygen to a plant's root zone. These Danish Base Trays are purpose made for use with highly oxygenated DIY drip irrigation systems with a predrilled drainage hole at the front, allowing them to be used with various types of drain fittings, depending on the number of trays used and their configuration.
All Danish Base Trays have been manufactured using 100% food approved, high impact polystyrene since 1984. Over the years, these trays have been thoroughly tested in conjunction with various fertilisers, fluctuating temperatures, ultra- violet radiation, and ordinary day-to-day wear and tear in a modern greenhouse environment.
How to use Danish Base Trays
To use Danish Base Trays, you will need a reservoir, water pump, a timer, dripper lines, dripper stakes, dripper nipples, an outlet manifold and a nutrient range of your choice. Place your reservoir in the correct location in your grow-room, put the tray (with the predrilled hole) over the top of the reservoir so any water drains back once circulated
Install the pump and distribution piping and fill your pots with your substrate (soil, coco, or clay pebbles) or if using rockwool cubes/slabs use some arrow-drippers and run drip-lines from the feed piping to each pot, cube or slab. Fill the reservoir with water and mix in your nutrients, boosters and additives according to your feeding schedule. Transplant your plants into the trays and insert the drippers into the substrate in each pot/cube or slab close to each plant.
Most growers use a 24Hr timer such as the Grasslin time-switch to switch the water-pump on and off and thereby control the feeding times. Set your programmed time-switch to the correct time, plug it into a mains outlet and switch on. Plug the water-pump into the timer. The pump will now water your plants according to the programme you have set on the timer.
Most segmental timers have a minimum 15-minute on-period. For small plants in clay pebbles for instance, start with 2 or 3 15-minute feeds per day spread out through the lights-on period. For small plants in more water-retentive mediums such as rockwool, start with 1 or 2 15-minute feeds per day. For both types of mediums, the number of feeds per day will usually need to be increased as your plants grow larger. If you're using soil, we recommend buying a 7-day timer, to allow you to feed less regularly. You'll find the timers you need for the job in the Irrigation Timers section.
