How Haxnicks Coco Bricks Work
The Compressed Coco Brick turns into at least 60 litres of top quality coco grow-medium. Because the Coco Brick is dry and compressed, it is light and easy to transport and store. The coco is washed and buffered before packing to ensure that is a stable, quality product. The Compressed Coco Coir block provides an environmentally safe and economical growing medium which holds lots of water yet allows air to move freely through it providing oxygen for the roots. Coco coiris a great media in general, it's free of soil-borne diseases and naturally contains trichoderma – a friendly strain of fungus that actually helps protect roots from root-rot.
How to Use Coco Bricks
The coco used in the Compressed Coco Brick is washed before being compressed and packed. To use, open out the bag and place it into a large container at least 80 litres in size. Gradually add about 18 litres of water/nutrient solution which has been pH adjusted to 5.5 - 6.5, giving it a good stir as you go. The coco block will gradually soak up the water and expand. When the coco has been wetted and loosened, it will have a volume of around 60/70 litres (2.47 cubic feet). The coco can then be transferred into pots or hydro system and your plants can then be placed into it and grown as usual.
The coco contains very little or no nutrient so plants rooted into it must be fed with nutrient which is ideally Coco-specific, such as Canna Coco nutrient or House & Garden Cocos. Coco-specific nutrients are formulated to provide more Calcium and less Potassium than other hydroponic feeds because Coco tends to absorb Calcium and release Potassium naturally. If only a smaller amount of coco is needed, the brick can be broken or cut and expanded in smaller quantities by scaling down the amount of added water. For example, if you only need 5 litres of coco, use a little under half the brick and add 1.5 litres of water in an appropriate size container.
When using the coco, take care not to add any peroxide or bleach products as this will kill or severely inhibit the trichoderma fungi.
